Google Wants You to Stay Fresh

November 8th, 2011 • Posted by Bill Bice • Permalink

Google is always changing their algorithm for producing search results — every week. But they've made two particularly large changes recently that I want to talk about.

The Farmer Update

The first change was back in February, and is often referred to as the Farmer update. It's good news for all of us Internet citizens, because it reduced the rankings of content farm websites that produced poor content or content scraped from it's original source. We all know it when we see it: you click on on a link in search results, get a page filled with ads and a little bit of keyword-stuffed content.

This same effect can be seen on the hundreds of useless yellow page-like directory sites that show just basic information about your spa. Google pushing these sites down in search engine results pages (SERPs) makes it easier for your website to move up in the rankings and for Google Places to take prominence.

This has been a long-standing trend in Google's algorithm for a while, and the Farmer update just re-enforces Google's strategy.

The Freshness Update

It's been a long-standing struggle for Google, the tendency to trust old, established sites more but with an interest to show the most current and relevant results. Last week's Freshness update indicates an increased emphasis on newness.

So, the best combination? Established sites with regular updates. The Freshness update specifically targets search queries that Google has decided are about current events. You may think this doesn't apply to your spa, but I see this as part of a greater trend, on Google's part, to give better ranking to regularly updated, regularly growing websites. And your spa needs to be one of them.

What We Do to Help

We're constantly tuning our Dynamic Spa Websites platform for search engine optimization (SEO). For example:

  • We make blogging easy! Write a blog article, and it updates your website, Facebook and Twitter with one click. Then, your blog articles roll up into email campaigns to create your email newsletter.
  • Every time your website content is updated, either from content changes, blog articles, menu changes, new events, etc. SpaBoom automatically pings Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask to notifying them of your changes.
  • Automatic new content: One of things Google loves to see is websites that naturally grow in size, consistently over time. SpaBoom's built-in marketing campaigns always keep your website current and relevant, and those campaigns automatically create new pages on your site to keep it growing.
  • Sitemaps are the blueprint of your website, showing search engines where to go on your site. SpaBoom automatically creates and updates your website sitemap, maximizing the indexing by search engines of your website.

  • Use email marketing, it is designed to help you retain customers and deliver valuable promotions and information.
  • Make sure you are on the Joy of Spa and Spa Emergency! directories.
  • Blog, one post per week. Use your keywords and phrases and add fresh, relevant content consistently.

Avoid Website Design Disasters

November 19th, 2010 • Posted by Spa Kat • Permalink

Mention the word splash page and our web designer’s face cringes; her body lets out a shudder. She declares,

No splash pages, landing pages or welcome screens! It is useless and adds extra steps between the user and what brought them to your site in the first place.

That added barrier encourages online visitors to hit the back arrow fast and they won’t come back either. It really makes consumers frustrated and that sentiment transfers directly to a spa brand.

It’s so easy to lose sight of what website design is all about, your spa customers. They are online searching for valuable content, quick solutions and answers. It’s all about developing content they demand, so don’t create delays, irritate them or breed confusion with your website design.

With the online customer in the forefront, here are some website disasters that your spa business must avoid.

Predators Eat Peacocks with Cumbersome Plumage

Websites that put beauty first will not survive online. Clear navigation and functionality rule the roost. Dynamic websites are designed to organize information around consumer’s needs for maximum clarity. Functionality means that consumers see where they want to go intuitively, simple and easy.

If your core architecture is convoluted or “Shazam groovy” it might win awards but no one will find your website and those who do will be searching for the clever navigation hidden beneath layers of flash induced lightning bolts.

Also, avoid confusion with wearisome rollovers and maddening sub-navigation; each extra step moves you farther away from meeting consumer’s online needs.

Hieroglyphics are Antiquated for a Reason

Keep your typography readable, easy on the eye and don’t overwhelm consumers with too much information.

We live in a world of 140 characters and it is not written in Papyrus. Avoid unnecessary content or fluff,

says Lori Patton a SpaBoom graphic designer. Visually, stick with standard, easy to read fonts and don’t overwhelm with over-sized graphics that clutter up the page.

Speed Dating vs. Stock Photography

Imagine perusing a dating website, among the suitors is an unbelievably gorgeous picture, a profile that looks too perfect and sculpted. In real life, we just don’t buy it. Spa consumers want to see what your spa looks like, not an endless array of stock photography. Research shows that real photos on websites lead to higher engagement and more revenue.

So invest in a great photographer and obtain attractive photos of your spa. It will provide more value to your website long-term. Video can work, but remember it is a huge online commitment to ask visitors to stop and listen to a 5-minute introduction. A single photo can speak volumes and work just as well.

Do Seek Balance with the Golden Ratio

Like all good things, balance is key to effectiveness in life and online. The Golden ratio has been used for centuries to create design that is aesthetic and welcoming to the eye. The ratio connects to a language that your brain is hardwired to understand, think of a nautilus shell. As the spirals get smaller they do so in a natural progression that is proportional to each spiral. The visual look of your website should incorporate your sense of good proportion and that will produce a design that is pleasing and harmonious to online consumers.

Waves Salon Dynamic Website

February 23rd, 2010 • Posted by Spa Kat • Permalink

During my years at design school the modern design principle, "form follows function" was systematically drilled into our heads as a reminder that shape should be primarily driven by its purpose.

Never has that concept been more applicable than within the context of SpaBoom’s Dynamic Web Design Philosophy. Good web design balances the complexities of consumer-centric functionality and the experiential and creative expression of the spa owner. When synergy happens it produces amazing results, dynamic websites that drive traffic and revenue.

waves.jpg

Waves Salon’s physical location epitomizes a modern design philosophy. The approach to the salon’s threshold grants an instant and crystal-clear view of the owner’s creative expression and contemporary design aesthetic. It is that clarity that drives the SpaBoom implementation staff to articulate the salon owners' vision for their Dynamic Website.

Information gathered in the initial implementation phase is critical to an effective website design result. Waves Salon's success was driven by a few targeted questions asked and paired with very direct and precise answers.

  • Waves Salon provided SpaBoom with a list of websites that met their aesthetic and design standards. Universally, the list consisted of successful and industry respected spas and salons and all expressed a modern and contemporary aesthetic.
  • Waves Salon communicated specific details they wanted to convey in the website and that facilitated the team’s delivery of an effective and experiential website.
  • Photography was a key element within Waves Salon’s successful website design process. The photos were taken by a professional and served to aesthetically express the salon and transport online traffic right to their doorstep. Ultimately the photos drove the design and established a dominant spot within the website.

The SpaBoom staff drew upon these key elements to design the Waves Salon website. It is a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing design that serves its purpose to enhance the salon’s brand, drive online gift sales and deliver new clients to their physical location.

Website Showcase: Urban Escape Massage and Bodywork

October 6th, 2009 • Posted by Spa Kat • Permalink

A Dynamic Website to Build a Spa’s Brand

urbanescape.jpgOne of the most challenging tasks facing an entrepreneur is defining and refining a unique vision for their business. Sometimes the description doesn’t come without a wrenching, hard fought process that ekes out something less than desired.

Valerie Walton, owner of Urban Escape Massage and Bodywork is an exception because she knows exactly how she wants clients to feel when they enter her new spa. The new spa website perfectly reflects Valerie’s vision because she so clearly understands what she wants to communicate. That came through in early meetings with the SpaBoom dynamic website staff.

It is an amazing experience to work with someone like Valerie, seeing her clear vision come to life is a fantastic experience for me as well, says SpaBoom's Janell Loving.

Urban Escape Massage and Bodywork is founded on the philosophy that incorporating consistent massage and spa treatments into her clients' lives will positively impact and enhance their lifelong wellness. Valerie’s goal is to help her clients, no matter the age, incorporate consistent massage for improved health and also provide them with a sanctuary of tranquility and relaxation.

Valerie needed a flexible website for her new spa to increase visibility and build her spa brand. First SpaBoom worked with Valerie to develop and bring the Urban Escape Massage and Bodywork logo to life. Once it was complete, Valerie developed content for the website that reflects the experience she wants clients to have during their treatments. Her ability to generate revenue through online gift certificates and to utilize SpaBoom’s online booking tools also gives Valerie’s online customers more control.

SpaBoom continues to work with Valerie to refine her spa website to ensure she utilizes all of the SpaBoom marketing tools. The SpaBoom staff identified four areas where they might provide Valerie with continued guidance to help her improve website traffic and increase revenue for her business:

  • Show Valerie how to add treatment specials to her SpaBoom Dynamic website.
  • Leverage her client email list and utilize the SpaBoom email-marketing tool.
  • Improve search results by optimizing her website. This would include adding relevant content and links and by incorporating spa keywords to existing content.
  • Turn on the SpaBoom blog feature allowing Valerie to add content, utilize spa keywords and build her spa brand. She can post relevant articles and provide valuable information to her clients about massage and bodywork.

A skin specialist + Dynamic website = SEO Dynamite

skinessentials.jpgVery often life teaches us that conquering the big mountain does not define progress but rather it is the well thought out individual steps that ultimately garner success.

Janice Brownell defines herself as a skin educator, a specialist who sought out education and skill over time to build her knowledge of skin. That wasn’t always easy or simple to achieve when you live in the beautiful but remote area of Southern New Mexico.

I lived in Roswell, New Mexico and I often had to travel and search out opportunities to learn about skincare.
It is worth it for her clients who benefit from her skin solutions focus. The goal is to enhance the skin of each individual client and keep it healthy over the long term. When life brings change the true entrepreneur will take advantage of it and that is just what Janice did for herself. A move to Albuquerque presented an opportunity to work at a high-end spa and it also allowed her to learn more about the local community. After about a year she decided it was time to go out on her own.

It was just time for me to build a skin spa that utilized all the knowledge I have gained and create a space that established the right atmosphere for my clients.

Janice needed a Dynamic spa website that accurately reflected her new venture, clarified her position in the marketplace and clearly communicated her specialties, skin rejuvenation, acne and waxing. When Janice called SpaBoom she made it clear that she wanted a website that communicated who she was and what she could do for her clients. At SpaBoom the team learned that Janice’s skin solutions focus was integral to her brand and her spa website had to reflect that sentiment.

Janice kept the website soothing, with great photos and simple navigation that allows clients and potential customers to find what they need quickly. Because Janice has a number of specialties she is presented with a great opportunity to utilize SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to help drive traffic to her website. In addition, she understands the importance of building online traffic and increasing her revenue with SpaBoom Instant Gift Certificates.

SpaBoom will continue to work with Janice to ensure she fully utilizes SpaBoom’s full arsenal of marketing tools including email marketing and Joy of Spa. From our perspective, each client represents a long-term relationship and we are committed to working with clients to help them realize their full potential.

The best part about writing these stories is the opportunity to meet members of the SpaBoom community like Janice, whose soothing personality and can-do attitude inspire us all to do our jobs better every day.
