feedingseo.jpgExisting and potential spa customers are online using “search” to find information on your spa. Understanding and implementing a successful SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategy for your spa website is absolutely critical given today’s competitive and challenging business environment.

Many day spas and salons are also beginning to see the advantage of adding social media including blogs, Facebook and Twitter, to their marketing and online efforts. Early adoption to social media can enhance a spa website’s SEO by providing new, rich content and links to your website. Search engines are recognizing social content and rewarding businesses with increased visibility, which ultimately drives more traffic and revenue to these websites. Social media also gives your spa customers new ways to learn more about your spa business.

Search is the most efficient and effective way for consumers to discover content. Companies that want to take advantage now of where trends in information publishing, discovery and marketing would do well to ensure their content strategy factors in the value of search as well as social media.

It is very important to be aware that you can maximize social media’s SEO value for your spa by ensuring that you incorporate keywords into your blogs, Facebook page and Twitter feeds. Add specific keywords to your blog titles, descriptions and anchor text. It is a simple way of reinforcing who you are, what differentiates you from other spas and builds visibility at the same time.

Forward thinking companies are investing in social media for a variety of reasons, including gaining a competitive advantage through building relationships, creating content and capturing mind share. I think it’s safe to say that companies making investments in better connecting with their customers now, will have a distinct advantage over those that are resolved to 'wait and see' with this social web thing. We have been working on SEO for quite some time for our Fort Lauderdale Clinic & Spa. I think the social media aspect of SEO can be very valuable, but it is also quite time consuming, at least for me. In my humble opinion, SEO all boils down to content, and what you do with it. Google will tell you this is the number one thing you can do to increase your rankings. It only makes sense to me that if you are taking the time to write good content, that you take a moment to take the next step to get that content out to your followers. Then, we hope the hot topics go viral and you get people spreading the word for you. If I had a dollar for every automated call or every live person that called my business and pitched a SEO plan for us — I'd be rollin' in the dough. And they want like $250 a month. Wha? I tell them I don't do anything for $250 a month. Plus, I am on the first page so what more can you do? I agree with Mark — change your content more often than you are doing now. Keep it fresh, keep customers coming back for new information, make sure it jives with your broadcast email, etc. It is fun and not as time consuming as some might think. What can be time consuming is telling someone else what you want and they do a poor job and you end up doing it yourself anyway. The spa business is a unique business. You have to come across in the right fashion. Dead are the words "pampering" and "luxurious" — in are the healing words as stressed out clients look to us for refuge. Twitter is great fun and informative for our clients and vendors as well. A national magazine contacted me through twitter about an article for the fall. So we might get some national press. Now that's cool for a little spa! :-) –Jan

Social media is a great long term investment. An investment in relationships. Relationships take time to build. I think social media will help my business for years to come. That’s as long as our services continue to provide value to our clients, I’m passionate about helping people feel better and eliminate their body’s aches and pains naturally so I genuinely connect with people with an honest concern for their needs. I’m currently using Twitter. It allows me to find local Twitter users and maybe gain more local followers that way. Kristen T. LMT
