I missed the Eastern time part of the schedule and missed this webinar. Can I download it somewhere? Let me know.

    Thanks, Nicole

I didn't get a chance to attend the webinar so I don't understand where customers purchase joy of spas GC's. Reading the 'about us' section it's still part of Spaboom…

Is Joy of Spa being created as a competitor to Spafinder/Spa Wish? Or is it just another version of Spa Emergency?

Just trying to understand the differences…

  3. Nichole:

We are not able to rebroadcast the webinar but you can read a summary of what we covered in the presentation by clicking here. After reading that page, please give us a call and we will be happy to answer and specific questions you may have. Thanks for your question!

  4. Robert:

Great question! We are creating the Joy of Spa directory, newsletter and gift certificate to help our clients profitably benefit from online sales of universal spa gifts. The Joy of Spa program was developed using our unique experience selling over $50M of spa gift certificates online and at full price. For example, we know is that online gift buyers often shop at the very last minute when driving across town might not be an option. Also, we know that 1/3 of our clients online gift sales come from out of town buyers. By paying you, the selling spa, a commission for sales originating on your site or from a Joy of Spa newsletter sent by your spa, you can profit from those purchases and serve the needs of your clients without of town friends and family. Recipients of Joy of Spa gift certificates will be directed to one of our clients who will benefit from our low 9% redemption fee and quick transmission of the cash to your account.

Spa Emergency is a spa gift site geared toward a (dominantly male) buyer with little or no knowledge about spas, but who needs a present now. It has been very effective at attracting those shoppers. The Joy of Spa site is a much richer directory that can be integrated into your spa's website, email and other interactive marketing to extend your brand and keep you in touch with your clients. As a stand alone website, it is designed to draw the attention of a spa enthusiastic and funnel that traffic to one of our clients. At no charge, we provide your spa's description, service menu and reviews as well as featured specials. The Joy of Spa visitors can select an individual spa to book a treatment (at no charge to the client or the spa), buy that spa's gift certificate (at the same 15% commission that a spa would pay for a Spa Emergency sale) or purchase a Joy of Spa universal gift certificate, which will be redeemed at the 9% rate. Please give us a call if you would like to ask other questions directly.

  5. Janet Sanders says:

I find this odd. I see it as my competition. I would like to sell my Gift Certificates directly to the customer — not through another source. Nationwide exposure? I already have that with my own site. Someone who wants to buy their Mom a massage in my town will look up "my town + massage or + day spa" and my instant gift certificate information should make them buy from me… directly from me. Why would I direct customers away from my site to buy from you? I think that you all might see how many gift certificates are not getting redeemed and have decided you want a piece of that pie. That's what I am thinking. Is this the elephant in the room type conversation? You probably won't post this — but at least I know that if am thinking this others are too. We don't want to compete with you. You provide a service to us, a good one. But we should not give up our direct connection with consumers. What am I missing here? That this is so great? Unredeemed gift certificates go where? We donate a lot of ours. How would you donate? Just some burning thoughts about this whole Joy of Spa business model. –Jan

  6. Janet:

Thanks for the opportunity to address this question and provide clarity for any spas voicing this set of concerns about the Joy of Spa Universal Gift Certificate. Our mission at SpaBoom has always been to help make our clients more profitable. The Joy of Spa Universal Gift Certificate will not compete with your individual spa Instant Gift Certificates. Instead it competes with other network or universal gift cards.

Why we have our own gift certificate:

We took a good look at our data and conducted enough research to learn that there are two (2) kinds of gift buyers and three (3) types of buyer/recipient relationships.

    • Buyer #1 — This buyer does some research and finds a specific spa they believe will make a good gift for their recipient. Buyer #1 might peruse the service menu and read some online reviews before making a purchase decision.
    • Buyer #2 — This buyer wants a quick, classy gift but will not take time to learn about treatments or specific spas because they want the process to be fast and easy. Buyer #2 expects the one-stop-shop, or a universal spa gift certificate. This is often someone who is never going to visit a spa but may be the husband or friend of a spa enthusiast.

An individual spa’s IGC’s can only be sold to Buyer #1 because buying spa’s IGC requires choosing a particular spa. That is why spa gifts redeemable by many different spas in many different places have been successful. Many of you are doing business with other parties in the marketplace who provide similar spa gift services. The Joy of Spa Universal Gift Certificate will be unique in that it will be instant, sold online and have a low 9% redemption fee. Thus we are not competing with your IGC sales so much as we are competing with other sellers of universal gift cards.

Why it's good for our clients to sell JoS Universal Gift Certificates or other spa's IGC's:

With over $50M in sales of IGC’s we have learned that there are 3 types of buyer/recipient relationships:

    1. Buyer and Recipient live in your town.
    2. Buyer lives far away but Recipient lives in your town.
    3. Buyer lives in your town but Recipient lives far away.

Your spa can sell IGC’s to a buyer no matter where they live so long as the recipient lives in your general area. However, if the recipient does not live in your area you are out of luck. Your local clients are very likely buying gifts from any number of out of town spas or universal gift cards for their non-local friends and family with no benefit or involvement from you. However, via a Joy of Spa link or badge on your spa's website, a buyer can purchase an out-of-area Instant Gift Certificate from a specific spa or buy a JoS Universal Gift Certificate. Either way, we pay you a 9% commission because you provided the traffic/client.

Why this is not competitive with your direct sales:

We engineered the JoS website to feature your spa's brand and Instant Gift Certificate when a client accesses it from your website or newsletter. Please take a look at Spa Constantine or Terrace Retreat as examples. When you click the sage colored JoS "badge" the JoS site preserves the branding of the spa that provided the traffic so that it feels like an extension of that spa's website. When you click on "spas" thereafter, the original spa continues to be featured. To find another spa the visitor must affirmatively "tell" the directory to look in another city or for a different provider.

    Unredeemed gifts:

There are no secrets in this business; we all understand that gifts are a key component to the spa business. Please review SpaBoom's business model for Joy of Spa; SpaBoom is encouraging our clients to sell JoS Universal Gift Certificates from their sites and paying those spa’s 9% for each sale. We then charge the spa that redeems the gift 9%. It doen't take a rocket scientist to see that we will be collecting less than it costs us to sell these gifts. For JoS Universal Gift Certificates, SpaBoom pays the credit card fees, plus 9% to the originating spa and we provide all of the advertising, marketing and overhead. Unredeemed gift certificates will help offset these costs to keep our redemption fees low. Consequently, we have no incentive to take regular 5% commission sales away from our spa clients.

It is our goal to capture sales for SpaBoom clients that would have otherwise been missed, giving them a way to profit when their spa clients purchase spa gifts for out-of-town recipients. We are committed to creating a more profitable transactions model for our spa clients.

Please note that we are posting Janet's question in its entirety. We are happy to address everyone's questions and concerns about any part of the Joy of Spa program.

  7. Janet Sanders says:

    Seth,

You took a lot of time to provide a thorough explanation of the Joy of Spa model and I appreciate the response. I am happy that you did post everything I said — I was thinking that, "Gee, if I think this — than are others questioning it too?" I guess what I failed to see is that the "quickie" buyer who does absolutely no research is that big of a fish. So big of a part of a market that you want to capture that purchase. I deal with people asking detailed questions of services and I forget there is this whole other customer out there just doing a 2 minute purchase to make someone happy FAST. Part of me was afraid that I'd lose your valuable services to me — your customer — if you went elsewhere for profits. I wish you all the best in this new venture. In these time, I understand the need for new revenue streams! I do — thanks for the response. –J.
