Salons work to end domestic abuse

A recent New York Times article (registration required) highlights a new state program that works with Salons to identify signs of domestic abuse in their clients. Salons and their hair stylists in Manhattan and across the country are being trained to identify the signs of abuse and direct woman to available community resources and therapy targeted toward ending domestic violence.
From the article:
'The salon may be one of the few places women might be without their abuser around,' said Laurie Magid, a former state prosecutor who is acting United States attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. 'This program really addresses a need. You don't have a case unless you have a crime reported in the first place and that is the difficult area of domestic violence.'

Many victims will not speak up because of embarrassment. This goes for salon clients, staff and proprietors. They all can be silent sufferers of domestic violence. Note: It is most important to speak about the positives of the suspected victim, expressing to them how they make a positive difference in your life and business. It aids them in acquiring the power to do change the violent situation.

This is so great, now we have a circle of communication going. I have been helpful and aware of the abuses that have gone on through the years with clients. It has been great to help them through the 30 years of my career. Thanks for the confirmation that we are in the greatest business on Earth, touching and helping people inside and out.
